Bluetooth Sensor Applications with LE Audio
Bluetooth low energy is the technology of choice for a variety of low power wireless sensor applications. Now the next generation of Bluetooth low energy technology with audio capabilities, known as LE Audio, opens up new use cases and applications for ultra low power wireless audio sensors. This session provides an overview of LE Audio technology and its distinguishing features. Various audio use cases are proposed that show how features like low latency, low power, broadcast, and stream synchronization can be used in new sensor applications. Bluetooth for Long-Range Wireless IoT Enablement 
Bluetooth is a ubiquitous, global wireless technology that enriches and simplifies a wide variety of everyday interactions between us and our mobile devices. Pretty much everyone uses it from a consumer perspective but its reach and growing use in wireless applications for industrial, commercial and medical industries has been increasing exponentially over the last 5 years. However, Bluetooth still attracts a label as a ‘short range’ wireless technology but since the advent of the Bluetooth 5 in Dec 2016, its actual performance for wide area coverage in harsh RF environments needs to be reassessed. Laird Connectivity, and its global OEM customer base, has integrated Bluetooth 5 Coded PHY capabilities into a wide range of different end products and applications over the last 24 months and this talk will review its capabilities and document real world testing to show its growing dominance as the wireless technology of choice for IoT sensor enablement.

Exploring Connectivity Trends for Bluetooth® Low Energy in the Car 
Connectivity’s ubiquity in the world is certainly gaining momentum in the automotive industry. Many car owners think of automotive wireless connectivity as a simple interaction with an in-car infotainment system, but new applications are emerging, whether it’s personalizing an owner’s interaction with the vehicle, creating a path for lower-power connectivity operation when in the key-off state, or providing users the experience of passive entry via phone-as-a-key (PaaK) applications.

For several years now, TI’s Bluetooth® Low Energy technology has been connecting multiple elements within the car of , including head units, tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMSs), telematics control units (TCUs), car access through PaaK and other accessories. In this session, we will talk about the trends of Bluetooth Low Energy in automotive and explore a few of these end-equipments in more detail.

STMicroelectronics Sponsored Workshop - Predictive Maintenance: Use of Advanced Sensors in Smart Industry Applications
The STWIN SensorTile Wireless Industrial Node (STEVAL-STWINKT1) is a development kit that simplifies prototyping and testing of advanced industrial IoT applications such as condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. The kit features a core system board powered by a STM32L4+ with a range of embedded industrial-grade sensors for vibration analysis across a wide range of vibration frequencies, including very high frequency audio and ultrasound spectra, and high precision local temperature and environmental monitoring. To help speed up design cycles for end-to-end solutions a rich set of software packages (STSW-STWINKT01 and FP-IND-PREDMNT1) and optimized firmware libraries are provided, as well as a cloud dashboard application (DSH-PREDMNT). The kit supports BLE wireless connectivity through an on-board module, Wi-Fi connectivity through a special plugin expansion board (STEVAL-STWINWFV1), LPWAN via STMod+ compatible add-on boards.

In this three hour training, STMicroelectronics will guide the developers unboxing the STWIN platform, registering the kit to the AWS Cloud through the Dashboard application, configuring it and connecting it to the cloud and accessing the generated sensor data.

This a working session. Participants will need their own laptop running Windows 7 or later, or a MacBook running Windows (Parallels, VM Fusion, etc.); participants should have a basic understanding of the “C” programming language or equivalent. Note: Administrator rights are needed for software and driver installation. ST will provide the development kit and all software.

IM4: 10Mb/s Single Pair Ethernet: Ethernet to the Sensor Simply
The myriad of sensor interfaces are often ultimately transported to an Ethernet network. Specialized protocols on sensor networks are converted to Ethernet and IP in gateways, adding complexity and cost for users. While wireless IoT adds benefits for sensors which may not be fixed to a physical location, or may have their own power source, many sensors are fixed in location and require reliable power – resulting in at least a single pair of wires to them. Recently, IEEE 802.3 has been turning back to look at the speeds needed for sensors and actuators in OT space - industrial and building automation, intra-system applications, and automotive networks. The result is IEEE 802.3cg, published in early 2020, which adds 10BASE-T1L and 10BASET1-S for single-pair operation at 10 Mb/s and associated power delivery to the Ethernet family, enabling all Ethernet networks without gateways, and able to draw on the common Ethernet software stacks. This panel discusses the convergence of process control, industrial automation, building automation, and automotive sensor networking needs which have come together to drive these new developments in low speed ethernet, interfaces being released, and the next steps for the Ethernet ecosystem.

KEYNOTE: From Low Earth Orbit to the Moon, Mars, and Beyond: Capabilities Needed for NASA’s Human Exploration Campaign
NASA and the international space exploration community are on a mission to extend the human presence from Earth to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. For nearly 20 years, humans have resided onboard the International Space Station in low-Earth orbit, learning to live and work in space. NASA’s plans continue the journey in space beyond the space station, with the return of humans to the Moon, long-term exploration and science, followed by human missions to Mars and other destinations. Concurrently, NASA is working with partners from many industrial sectors to foster a robust economy in low-Earth orbit, where NASA will be one of many customers utilizing microgravity platforms for diverse activities such as scientific research, manufacturing, and tourism.

This keynote presentation discusses NASA’s current exploration plans and the challenges associated with human voyages to the Moon and Mars. It describes key human spaceflight capabilities that must be advanced to enable NASA’s exploration goals, including sensors and avionics that can survive extreme environments, systems that enable crew and vehicle autonomy, and highly reliable environmental monitoring systems that require minimal maintenance. The presentation addresses the importance and application of these capabilities to deep space human spaceflight. It discusses the activities required to advance critical exploration capabilities, the means of demonstrating system performance, and implementation planning, including selection of flight test location based upon the unique environments and characteristics of the International Space Station, exploration-class vehicles, and lunar surface habitats.

What are smart sensors and actuators and their characteristics, and how can they facilitate the development of IoT, IIoT, and Cyber-Physical Systems applications? This session focuses on a suite of distributed architecture-based smart transducer interface standards for sensors and actuators, designated as IEEE 1451. These standards specify communication protocols and metadata in the form of transducer electronic data sheets for networked digital smart sensors and actuators suitable for wired and wireless sensing and actuating applications. The concept of IEEE 1451 is based on a distributed architecture, which means intelligence is decentralized and is pushed down to the sensor module level. This arrangement is well suited for edge-computing and remote monitoring and control applications, e.g., machinery health monitoring and condition-based maintenance in manufacturing and production environments. It also builds the foundation for artificial intelligent-based applications that utilize networked sensors and actuators.

SC2: Lighting & Sensor Approach to Mobility Solutions: ADAS/AV & Smart City
Providing ancillary lighting techniques to ADAS and AV sensors can increase dynamic range therefore object detection and recognition. LiDAR, radar, and camera, sensors that are necessary for L2+ and AVs will require a housing location along with enhancements during periods of adverse weather. Technology such as gated cameras, a technology where pulsed light is synchronized with the sensor exposure time and by doing this the sensor is able to integrate a specific segment of reflected light. By taking into account the speed of light it can then determine the distance of the object in foggy or hazy conditions. Other technologies that provide enhanced visibility, such as Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB), a lighting technology that is always in high beam mode but selectively dims areas of oncoming and preceding traffic to low beam to reduce glare, will also help in the visibility of objects as night. Attendees of this session walk away with an understanding of how advanced exterior lighting and new technologies in lighting are being developed to assist L2+ and AVs.

AT8: Ultra-Low-Power Chemical Sensing With Metal-Organic Frameworks
A classic challenge in gas sensing is chemical selectivity of the sensing material. A new class of materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), can take on thousands of forms, each with unique chemical adsorption properties. In this session, David Gardner discusses their work demonstrating that MOFs can be used directly as a sensing material on the chemical-sensitive field-effect transistor (CS-FET), an ultra-low-power sensing platform. An unexpected challenge of the CS-FET platform was interference from off-target molecules reacting with the SiO2 gate dielectric, and we show how this interference can be eliminated. He shows several highly chemically-selective metal-organic framework sensing materials, including HKUST-1 for humidity, ZIF-8 for nitrous oxide, and MFM-300 for ammonia.

In this session, Enzo Signore discusses how LiDAR technology is being deployed in smart cities/smart spaces, and shares a few relevant case studies from Quanergy's partners. By using Quanergy’s QORTEX DTC solution, city officials have reduced economic costs and pollutants from traffic congestion, as well as provided rich data for city officials to help them prioritize spending as they begin planning cities of the future. This session explores how LiDAR hardware and software technology is able to detect, track and classify humans vs. vehicles, and how the technology is able to provide location and movement about each object.
