Monitoring smoke and other particulates is essential for health and safety in industrial, commercial, and residential settings. This session describes a platform for optically based smoke and particulate monitoring application development that facilitates a spectrum of use cases, from continuous, wired operation, to low average power sampled applications with local data storage for long-term monitoring. Multiple system-level aspects of the design will be detailed, including physical smoke chamber construction, optical and electronic design, software device drivers, portable application code, and algorithmic development.
