Railroads in North America recently invested tens of billions of dollars to comply with a federal mandate to deploy a sensor network and wireless communications technology called positive train control, designed to prevent accidents due to human error. This session describes the deployed technology, its current limitations, and a sensor technology augmentation they developed to automatically identify anomalies due to track and roadbed problems, which is a dominant cause of railroad accidents. The information presented in this session was assembled by Raj Bridgelall and Denver Tolliver.
